If you’re planning your first trip to Universal Orlando Resort, get ready for one of the most exciting theme park vacations in the world. With blockbuster rides, immersive worlds, incredible food, and some of the best roller coasters anywhere, Universal is built for adventure.

But if you’ve never been before, it can also feel a little overwhelming. Three parks + Volcano Bay (the best water park), dozens of rides, hotels, and planning strategies. . . where do you even start?

This guide will walk you through everything first-timers need to know so you can plan smarter, skip the biggest mistakes, and have an unforgettable trip.

Universal is broke up into one central hub, three theme parks, and one water park.

City Walk:

Start in City Walk. Its the central hub for Universal, and connects Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Shopping, restaurants, live music, a movie theater, mini golf and more! It is also the hub for the bussing system to the hotels, Epic, and Volcano Bay.

My favorites at City Walk:

  • Hollywood Mini Golf: Two vintage 1950s-style mini-golf courses: The Haunting of Ghostly Greens (horror) and Invaders from Planet Putt (sci-fi)

  • Toothsome: Known for its Steampunk theme and over-the-top gourmet milkshakes like the Red Velvet or Marshmallow Crisp.

  • Voodoo Doughnut: Famous for its eclectic and artistically decorated doughnuts, including the iconic Voodoo Doll filled with raspberry jelly.

    Now choose your adventure!

  • Universal Studios Florida – Movie-themed rides and attractions

  • Universal Islands of Adventure – Thrill rides and immersive lands

  • Epic Universe - Universal brand new park

  • Volcano Bay - The best water park in Orlando

Universal Studios:

Popular attractions include:

  • Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts (My favorite ride at this park)

  • The Mummy Roller Coaster

  • Transformers: The Ride 3D

You’ll also find The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, one of the most detailed theme park lands ever built.

First-timers usually love:

  • Wand magic in Diagon Alley

  • Butterbeer - EVERYTHING. The fudge is to die for, and nothing beats a frozen butterbeer in the Florida heat.

  • The Hogwarts dragon breathing fire over Gringott

  • The minion cafe - it delicious and fun, with healthy options

Islands of Adventure:

This park is where Universal’s big thrill rides live.

Must-do attractions include:

  • Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (My favorite in all of the parks) Run to this ride at rope drop!

  • Jurassic World VelociCoaster

  • The Incredible Hulk Coaster

You’ll also find Hogsmeade, the second half of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

If you want the full Harry Potter experience, you’ll need to ride the Hogwarts Express, which connects the two parks. (You must have a park hopper tickets to ride)

Don't miss:

  • Wand magic in Hoggsmede

  • Breakfast at Three Broomsticks - the pancakes are yummy!

  • Meeting a Dino in Jurassic Park

  • Mythos Restaurant (I crave the risotto)

Epic Universe:

Universals Newest Theme Park

Must do attractions:

  • Startdust Racers - the racing coaster

  • Meet the Universal Monsters in Darkmore

  • Le Cirque Arcanus - a live-stage show that is incredible

  • Hiccups Wing Gliders

Get to this park early & have the expectations of long wait times - they are still ironing the kinks of the new park, and its popular!

Don't Miss:

  • Eating crepes in Paris

  • Das Stakehaus (Dark Universe): A vampire-themed steakhouse recommended for its immersive atmosphere and the food to "die" for!

  • The Untrainable Dragon (Isle of Berk)

  • Character Meet-and-Greets: Do not miss the opportunity to meet Toothless at Haddock Paddock in Isle of Berk or various Nintendo characters like Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach in Super Nintendo World.

Volcano Bay:

Open year round. This amazing water park takes thrill to another level. If you want a lounger or chair in the shade, arrive early (especially in Summer). Lockers are available for all valuables. Tip: Bring Sunscreen the Sunscreen in the park is $$$

Don't Miss:

  • Krakatau Aqua Coaster: A first-of-its-kind water coaster that uses magnetic technology to propel four-person canoes through the heart of the volcano.

  • Ko’okiri Body Plunge: A near-vertical, 125-foot drop slide featuring a 70-degree trap-door start.

  • TeAwa The Fearless River: A high-speed "action river" where guests wear life vests to navigate through churning rapids and waves.

  • Honu ika Moana: A multi-person raft ride that includes massive walls for a "zero-gravity" sensation.

  • Waturi Beach: A multi-directional wave pool at the base of the volcano, offering a relaxing spot to swim or sunbathe.

Volcano Bay also offers TONS of food and drink options some of my favorites:

  • Mango BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich: Topped with caramelized pineapple and mango slaw on a Hawaiian-style bun. It’s frequently cited as a park favorite, though it can be messy.

  • Hawaiian Longboard Pizza: An elliptical, surfboard-shaped thin-crust pizza topped with caramelized pineapple, ham, and jalapeños.

  • Volcano Bay Rum Punch: A refreshing blend of aged light rum and pineapple juice, available at both the Dancing Dragons and Kunuku boat bars.

  • Jerk Shrimp Mac & Cheese (Whakawaiwai Eats): Pan-seared shrimp tossed with pasta in a creamy white cheddar sauce with a spicy island twist.

Some tips to help your vacation be a little better:

Arrive before park opening.
You can knock out several rides with short waits.

Ride the big rides early or late.
Midday lines can hit 90+ minutes.

Download the Universal Orlando app.
It shows live wait times. Order food for a super easy and quick dining experience.

Take advantage of single-rider lines.
You can skip huge waits if you don’t mind splitting up.

Work with a travel agent.

Working with a travel agent to book a Universal Studios vacation is generally recommended because our services are free of charge. Our agency earn a commission directly from Universal that is already built into the package price, meaning you pay the same amount whether you book yourself or use an expert. Plus agents can see exclusive deals, all the different promos, saving you money!

Working with an agent gives you piece of mind that every detail of your vacation thought of, and you just show know you will have one of the best weeks of your life!

Universal Orlando is one of the most immersive theme park destinations on earth. From casting spells in the Wizarding World to launching through the jungle on VelociCoaster, the parks are packed with unforgettable experiences.

For first-time visitors, the key is planning ahead, arriving early, and prioritizing the rides you’re most excited about.
